Heron Lake State Park
The lake, dam, and state park are named after Kenneth A. Heron, an engineer in the early 1900s who realized that water could be diverted from wetter areas to the north, to the benefit of more arid regions to the south.  A picturesque lake set among tall Ponderosa pines, Heron Lake State Park is designated a quiet lake, where boats may operate at no-wake speeds only.

It is known for it's great sailing, fishing, cross-country skiing, rafting, and hiking.
The New Mexico Sailing Club's pristine marina consists of 235 much sought-after slips and buoys, plus guest docks and support facilities. The lake's elevation is approximately 8,000'; its surface area is about 5 by 3 miles. It is a "no wake" lake, without jet skis or speedboats.

Los Brazos
Below is a view of the Los Brazos cliffs, headwaters of the Brazos River and part of the Rio Chama river system.  The Brazos mountain range is in Rio Arriba County, and runs from the border with Colorado for over 20 miles in a south-southeasterly direction. The high point of the range is on Grouse Mesa, at the Brazos Benchmark (11,405 feet).

Two miles to the southeast is the more distinctive Brazos Peak, at 11,288 feet. The range is mostly located in the privately-held Tierra Amarilla Land Grant (the Carson National Forest is to the east and south). It is a distinctive part of the view from the west, including from Heron Lake. U.S. Route 64 crosses the southern end of the range at a 10,481 foot (3194 m) pass.

the Rio Chama, a tributary to the Rio Grande, meanders its way through a stunning sandstone canyon, where canyon walls are lined with ponderosas and cottonwoods. Georgia O’Keefe was inspired by the Rio Chama region.
